WHAT DOES BAREFOOT SHOES FOR RUNNING MEAN?

New to barefoot shoes. We reside in Montana exactly where it will get to -20 or reduce. Any solutions on boots? Am I appropriate in considering you'd need the thick boot to guard from the extreme cold? Look for boots with a large toe box it's possible?
